Is RF Microneedling or Laser Safe for Dark Skin Tones?

Short answer
The short answer is: RF microneedling is generally considered a safer option for darker skin tones, and certain lasers (like the Nd:YAG) have also shown good safety profiles. However, some lasers carry a higher risk of pigmentation changes in darker skin, so the choice of device and provider experience matter greatly.
What the research shows
People with darker skin tones (often described as Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI) have more active pigment-producing cells, which means energy-based treatments carry a higher risk of leaving dark or light spots after the procedure. That said, not all devices carry the same risk.
RF microneedling works by delivering radiofrequency energy through tiny needles deep into the skin, largely bypassing the pigment in the outer skin layer. A systematic review of 35 studies found that RF and RF microneedling have a low risk of scarring or pigmentation problems in darker skin tones, with only rare cases of lasting side effects. For lasers, the picture is more nuanced. Nonablative fractional lasers (which target water, not melanin) are considered safer for darker skin than ablative lasers. [1] The short-pulse Nd:YAG laser has become a popular choice for darker skin tones, with improvements seen in hyperpigmentation, acne, fine lines, and scars. [1] However, some laser types, such as pulsed dye laser used for vascular concerns, can be riskier in darker skin and may lead to hyperpigmentation or scarring if not used carefully. What this means for you
RF microneedling is currently one of the most studied and favorably reviewed energy-based treatments for people with darker skin. It has a strong track record for improving skin texture, fine lines, and acne scarring with a relatively low chance of causing new pigmentation problems. [2] [1]
If you are interested in laser treatment, certain laser types (especially Nd:YAG and nonablative fractional lasers) have better safety profiles for darker skin than others. Ablative or pigment-targeting lasers that have not been specifically selected for your skin tone carry a higher risk. [1]

Caveats
While the evidence is encouraging, it is important to note that many of the studies on RF microneedling in darker skin are relatively small and lack the highest level of scientific rigor. Side effects that do occur most commonly include temporary redness or mild post-inflammatory darkening of the skin, which usually resolves on its own.
